Smoking and Your Health
Among these risk factors, cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of diseases and deaths in the United States alone. Cigarette smoking is widespread and it has been estimated that 1.1 billion people smoke around the world. Of these billions of people, around 3.5 million die every year due to tobacco-related illnesses which equals to 10,000 deaths per day. By the year 2020, smoking will be the leading cause of death and disability. Currently, tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world being responsible for the death of one in ten adults worldwide amounting to about 5 millions deaths each year. Despite warnings and if the current smoking patterns continue, death toll will rise to 10 million casualties each year when we reach the year 2020.
